Yea! It's done! I'm so relieved! I have worked and prayed and stressed over this presentation ever since I first learned about it! Things I liked:
I learned that research supports my lesson:
Many studies support music as a positive influence on writing. A study by Kariuki, & Honeycutt (1998) reported when [students] were exposed to music during writing assignments students showed an increase in writing output.
Music can be a motivational tool, act a stress reducer and have a calming effect and take away from the pressure of writing. (Black, 1993; Kariuki, & Honeycutt 1998; Donohoe, & McNeely, 1999; Israel 2004;
positive reaction from participants!
speed of presentation
working technology (this is not always the case in the typical classroom).
This could be used easily for learning any kinds of facts, whether it is in the history or science or P.E. classroom.
We could use anything as an instrument--pencil, pen, ruler--they do anyway already!
Things I need to change: (Journal, I made these changes in my Demo, and anticipate these changes when implemented into my classroom).
I could have had more activities-spent more time brain storming (see step 5 of "Think Out Loud")
I should have talked about a genre of music appropriate to a particular time period.
I need to add hand actions (snap, clap) prior to using the rhythm instruments.
It would be good to add prewriting and post writing to frame the session. This would be a good change for making into a formal presentation for adults as well as to set the stage for the activity; prewrite ‘how do you normally learn facts?’ and post write ‘how was this activity different from your usual way of learning, and how you use it in the future?’ Journal, it was so weird! I don't remember when I have been soooooooooooooooooooooooooo nervous! It was like my brain shut off at the 60 minute mark and refused to compute beyond it.
After the teams worked together, next time I need to let the teams work with another team for input (to ask for help/validation on their song).
I need to model! Model! Model!
After I load their videos I need to allow them time to comment on the strengths of each others videos? (This is addressed in my extensions).
I also need to state my summary of the day’s class lesson and make clearly when our lesson ended.
If time permits, when I do this in the class, I need to allow students to do "another song" maybe doing a different time period.
